Electrocardiographic findings in hospitalized patients with active SARS-CoV-2 infection

Background: Early recognition of electrocardiographic alterations in COVID-19 allows obtaining a rapid and accurate diagnosis to establish timely treatment. Objective: Description of electrocardiographic features in patients with COVID-19 infection in a Third Level Medical Facility. Method: Descriptive study. The main electrocardiographic findings of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 by PCR or molecular amplification testing were evaluated. Patients over 18 years of age who were admitted to the intensive care unit and COVID unit between February and November 2021 were included. Descriptive statistics were used, frequencies, percentages and chi-square for nominal variables. The association between categorical variables was determined using the chi-square test. Results: Seventy-five files were analyzed; 42 (56.0%) men and 33 (44.0%) women, aged between 20 and 110 years, mean 54.84, SD: 14.99 years. The main electrocardiographic findings were sinus rhythm (94.7%), ST-segment abnormalities (7.7%), P-wave abnormalities (12.0%), QRS complex morphology abnormalities (13.4%) and T-wave abnormalities (22.6%). The reported complications associated with COVID-19 were pericarditis (2.7%), left ventricular hypertrophy (4.0%) and complete atrioventricular block (4.0%). A p = 0.001 was obtained for the relationship between the T wave and the presence of comorbidities in infected patients. Conclusions: Delayed repolarization of myocardial tissue was the main electrocardiographic abnormality.
